Significance of Thickeners for Textile Printing

Printing thickeners constitute of thick paste – either natural or synthetic, having the potential to soak water to help localized printing. These could be derived from guar powder, or carboxy methyl tamarind as these substances are sticky for easy application on the surface of fabric without leaving any signs of bulging.

Application of Thickeners in Textile Industry

If we talk about thickeners in textile printing, guar gum thickener is of the essence. It aids in direct painting on nylon, silk and wool – any type of fabric. The application may range from on cotton fabric, acrylic blanket printing, burn out printing, carpet printing etc. It improves the color and gives life to print.

Properties of Thickeners

The hydrocolloid is the element that is used to guide the design to avoid any bleed into its borders. Thickeners have the potential to cease premature chemical reactions during the process of printing.

Textile Printing Thickeners

Guar gum is considered to be one of the major thickeners that are widely used in printing textiles. This is made of macromolecules and is capable of absorbing water. Guar gum forms a sticky paste that adds color value to the textile.
The hydrocolloid is the major ingredient in creating a concentrated thickener, which is in the form of off white powder. This is the by-product of guar beans that are processed to get this ingredient. Guar gum is known to be an efficient printing thickener due to its being rich in galactose, which is soluble and a great stabilizer.

Carboxy methyl tamarind is also a textile thickener containing polysaccharide, ash and moisture content. It is helpful in various applications like, cotton or vat dying.


To get the right color, textile need to have dispersed printing thickeners and because of this guar gum and tamarind kernel powder are important for textile printing.
